What is the sentence for sexual offences?

The sentence for sexual offences varies depending on the offence and can be severe. For example, the maximum sentence for rape is life imprisonment. The Court will judge each matter on its own facts and will take account of the circumstances, such as whether the attack was planned, when deciding on the sentence.

Being convicted of or cautioned for some sexual offences also results in your name automatically being placed on the Sex Offenders Register. This includes rape and most sexual offences against children. You can also be placed on the Register for other crimes, such as sexual assault, in certain circumstances.
